KUALA LUMPUR (Sept 22): Cash-strapped Malaysia Airlines Bhd has deferred periodic payments due on Sept 30 to the holders of its RM1.5 billion nominal value Unrated Perpetual Sukuk Musharakah, by six months.

According to CIMB Investment Bank, via an announcement put up on Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM)’s Fully Automated System for Issuing and or Tendering (FAST) site, the airline has issued notices of deferral dated Sept 17 to the holders of its Islamic bond.

"Pursuant thereto, please be informed that there will be no payment of Periodic Distribution Amounts to the sukuk holders on the Periodic Distribution Date in respect of the following Periodic Distribution Periods: (1) from March 29, 2019 to Sept 30, 2019; (2) from Sept 30, 2019 to March 31, 2020; (3) from March 31, 2020 to Sept 30, 2020.

"Accordingly, the Periodic Distribution Date will be deferred to the next Periodic Distribution Date i.e. March 31, 2021," the announcement read.

The airline had issued the sukuk in 2016 to raise funds for working capital and general investment, among others.

On July 28, Malaysia Airlines said its sole shareholder Khazanah Nasional Bhd had been supportive of its efforts to address and cope with the impact of the COVID-19 crisis, but had not committed any additional funding to the national carrier.

At the time, it was responding to a report that it had secured US$300 million worth of new funding to help see it through the pandemic crisis.

GEORGE TOWN (Sept 23): The Small and Medium Enterprise Association Malaysia (Samenta) welcomes the Federal Government’s initiative of introducing the Targeted Wage Subsidy Programme to assist employers and employees economically affected by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Samenta president, Koay Chiew Guan told Bernama that the wage subsidy programme would strongly aid the small and medium enterprises (SMEs) to mitigate the economic impact from the pandemic.
“It is a good move from the Federal Government as the wage subsidy programme would definitely help boost the recovery of SMEs nationwide,” he said.
He also urged the SMEs to apply for the wage subsidy when the application is open from Oct 1 to Dec 31 this year.
Earlier today, the Government announced several initiatives and additional assistance under the RM10 billion PRIHATIN Supplementary Initiative Package (Kita Prihatin) in order to boost economic recovery.
Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said that one of the several initiatives was the Targeted Wage Subsidy Programme, estimated to involve RM2.4 billion and expected to benefit 1.3 million workers
He said the wage subsidy would be given to employers still affected by the pandemic, namely companies facing lower revenues by at least 30% compared to last year, since the Recovery Movement Control Order (RMCO) came into force.
The wage subsidy will be given for up to three months at a rate of RM600 per month for each employee, with a maximum of 200 employees per company.
